More details

Katagami stencil with a background design of kikko (linked hexagons) containing patterning that resembles basketry. Kikko are associated with longevity because of their resemblance to turtle shell. Over the top of this design is a scatter of stylised hemp leaves - asa no ha . The hemp leaf pattern is emblematic of strong growth and is sometimes used on babies' and children's clothing because of this association. The outline style of the hexagons and hemp leaves imitates a stitch resist technique - ori-nui shibori. This stencil forms a pair with K3.14 with the two stencils contributing different detail to the finished design. This stencil is of the chūban size class (determined by the repeat length).
