Brief description
Katagami stencil with a design of carriage wheels (emblematic of classical culture) containing stylised chrysanthemum heads within a geometric border, 1850-1890
Katagami stencil with a design of carriage wheels (emblematic of classical culture) containing stylised chrysanthemum heads within a geometric border. The chrysanthemums within the wheels have sixteen petals, resembling the imperial seal. Motifs of this sort could be associated with officials or with Shinto priests. Around these are stylised flower heads, probably chrysanthemums, surrounded by scrolling stems with more naturalistic depictions of honeysuckle. A fine mesh of supporting threads made of silk is sandwiched between two layers of this stencil. This stencil is approximately of the chūban size class (determined by the repeat length).
