Brief description
Katagami stencil with a geometric design of shokkō (linked octagons and squares) containing hanabashi (diamond shaped flowers) and imitation tie dye - kumo shibori, 1850-1890
Katagami stencil with a geometric design of shokkō (linked octagons and squares) containing hanabashi (diamond shaped flowers) and imitation tie dye - kumo shibori . The outline of the geometric pattern imitates a stitch resist technique (ori-nui shibori ). The design includes irregular breaks across its surface which contain small scattered circles. Tie bars are used to hold the stencil structure, these would be covered over by paste applied through a second stencil (K2.96), so would not appear on the printed textile. This stencil is of the koban size class (determined by the repeat length).
