Katagami stencil with geometric undulating design known as fundo tsunagi . Within individual cells are depictions of plants and auspicious patterning including plum blossom, bamboo, pines. These plants are the Three Friends of Winter symbolise longevity (pine) , perseverance (bamboo bending in strong winds) and renewal (plum one of the earliest blossoms in spring). Patterning of kikko (linked hexagons), representing longevity and seigaiha (waves from the blue ocean), representing calm, are also depicted. The design has mostly been cut with an awl (kiribori technique). This stencil is of the koban size class (determined by the repeat length).
