Katagami stencil depicting pine tree branches and cranes formed into roundels. Both pine trees and cranes are associated with longevity. Tie bars are used to hold the stencil structure, these would be covered over by paste applied through a second stencil (K1.16) so would not appear on the printed textile. This is the secondary (erasing) stencil (keshigata ) with less of the finished detail. This stencil is of the sansun okuri or koban size class (determined by the repeat length).
