Katagami stencil with a design of shōkko (octagons and rectangles). The rectangles contain seigaiha (waves from the blue sea) which are emblematic of a wish for calm days ahead. The octagons contain, alternately, peonies and crouching lions. Both of these motifs were introduced to Japan from China, the peony and lion is a common pairing. A fine mesh of supporting threads made of silk is sandwiched between two layers of this stencil. This stencil is of the sansun okuri or koban size class (determined by the repeat length).
