More details

Sample of hand-block printed fabric 'Spook', designed and printed by Enid Marx, c.1930. In her early work she reacted against the use of garish colours prefering to produce hand-made fabrics using vegetable and mineral colours. This sample is galled linen, dyed in iron, and printed with muriate of tin to discharge the design. It features natural and geometric forms. The lively, vibrant surface is created by the unique qualities of the hand- carved wood blocks used to print it.
