More details

A design for a trade card probably by Arthur Silver, for Charles Knowles and Co., one of the Studio's most important customers in the 1890s. Charles Knowles and Co. was a wallpaper manufacturing firm who specialised in reprinting early nineteenth-century chintz designs from old blocks and who also made a point of using designs from inexpensive block- and machine-printed wallpapers from some of the country's leading designers. These included Christopher Dresser, C.F.A. Voysey and George Haite, as well as the Silver Studio. The firm was bought by A. Sanderson, in 1913.
