Hyperion: A Romance

This is an early prose romance by the American poet H.W. Longfellow, first published in 1839. The story contains many biographical elements including the thinly disguised tale of his unsuccessful courtship of Frances Appleton. Appleton was unimpressed with Hyperion and continued to reject Longfellow's proposal. She finally agreed to marry him in 1843. This book has a colourful illustrated front page. It is part of the reference collection of the graphic designer Charles Hasler.
