‘Home heating and hot water by gas’ booklet

This is a guide to British home heating, published in 1962. It focuses on the use of solid fuel and gas fires. By the 1960s, coal fires were falling out of fashion in Britain. Smoke from domestic fires produced dust and grime in the home and was a major cause of pollution in cities such as London. Gas fires were marketed as a clean, modern alternative and were designed to slot straight into coal fire surrounds. A strong selling point was the familiar ‘warmth’ of visible flames.
