More details

This is a fully illustrated catalogue in black and white, with some colour featuring suggested Christmas presents from Harrods in 1932. It includes jewellery, wireless sets, domestic appliances household furnishings, toys, games, books, clothing and furniture. Items are given a description, dimensions and prices. There was no definable Harrods style to the goods on offer, although many were branded with the shop's name. Harrods was a general retailer on a very grand scale in the 1930s; the store prided itself on being able to supply anything for anybody. The business had begun with Charles Henry Harrod's small grocery shop in the East end in 1834. Their current store in Knightsbridge opened in 1905 initially on just two floors of the building, with luxury flats on the floors above. They also sold through regular mail-order catalogues, extending the Harrods experience. The grocery side, available in a wicker Harrods hamper, was particularly popular at Christmas time.
