More details
The Daily Mail Book of Home Plans was published in 1979.
The architecture of homes in the 1970s was influenced by the Essex Design Guide for Residential Areas. The guide was published in 1973 and favoured a return to nostalgic, rural building styles that were similar to houses built in the 1930s and 1950s.
The report also advised that there be greater provision of insulation, central heating, utility spaces and multiple bath and toilet facilities in homes. Houses built in the 1970s also abandoned the open planning trend of the 1960s, instead having multiple reception rooms.
This guide gives examples of the wide range of house types available in the 1970s.
