The New Raffia Work on Canvas and Matting

This booklet, entitled ‘The New Raffia Work on Canvas and Matting’ was published by Leach’s in London around 1930. Raffia is a natural fibre produced from the leaves of the raffia palm, which grows in parts of Africa. In the early part of the twentieth century, raffia was used to make a variety of products for the home and for fashion. This booklet features patterns for people to use to create hats, cushions, table mats, bags and cigarette cases at home.
