More details
This is a wallpaper sample manufactured sometime between 1900 and 1930. The design is on a cream ground featuring a large purple flower with a feathery bloom and two buds, surrounded by green leaves with defined teeth. The flower could be a chinese aster.
Listen to the audio create as part of the Sonic Wallpaper Project commissioned by MoDA and realised by Dr Felicity Ford: https://soundcloud.com/modamuseum/09-badda-4856
To create this piece, willing interviewees were asked to respond to wallpaper in the MoDA collection and asked to share their responses. Felicity then went on to create field-recordings based on what people said about the wallpaper design. She then layered these recordings with the interview material relating to this design, expanding the fantasies of home decorating using the descriptive powers of sound!
People responded to this wallpaper (accession no. BADDA 4856) with fantasies involving tentacled sea-creatures and chrysanthemums. Recordings used to sonically expound on these imaginings would not have been possible without the help of the Horniman Museum Aquarium and the London Aquatic Design Centre.
