This is a design for an overmantel by Arthur Silver from around 1880. The overmantel replaced the pier glass in English houses in the 1870s and 1880s for chimney-piece decoration. Most writers on interior design in the 1880s recommended them as a convenient way of displaying a large quantity of ornamental objects.
