More details

This is a wallpaper sample. It features a central pattern of a runner bean, in grey with light and dark green leaves and orange/red buds, all on a white ground with grey dots. This design by E Q Nicholson was used on both furnishing fabric and wallpaper. Listen to the audio created for the Sonic Wallpaper Project commissioned by MoDA and realised by Dr Felicity Ford: https://soundcloud.com/modamuseum/12-badda-4857 To create this piece, willing interviewees were asked to respond to wallpaper in the MoDA collection and asked to share their responses. Felicity then went on to create field-recordings based on what people said about the wallpaper design. She then layered these recordings with the interview material relating to this design, expanding the fantasies of home decorating using the descriptive powers of sound! People responded to this wallpaper (accession no. BADDA 4857) with fantasies involving rain on the allotment, Jack and the Beanstalk, staircases, vines, and the loveliness of beans. The recordings of characterful stairs could not have been made without the assistance and support of the staff at Dr Johnson's House.
