More details

Seven utility mark designs prepared by Enid Marx for S C Leslie, Director of the Council for Industrial Design, c.1946. The Board of Trade had introduced the utility scheme to deal with the shortage of goods during the Second World War. Furniture, clothes, blankets and sheets were marked with a 'CC41' symbol to show that they had been made according to the regulations, but to a good standard of workmanship and design. CC stood for Civilian Clothing and 41 for1941, and Reginald Shipp had designed the original symbol. None of Marx's proposals were adopted, and the original symbol was retained.
