More details
This is a wallpaper sample of the design 'Abstract', by Graham Sutherland in 1945. Sutherland was a painter and engraver who exhibited in the International Surrealist Exhibition, held in London in 1936. He also worked as an official war artist in the Second World War. In 1945 this Sutherland pattern appeared in the Victoria and Albert museum's influential exhibition 'Historical and British Wallpaper.' It also appeared on the cover of Architectural Review in July of that year. It was then exhibited at the 'Britain Can Make It' exhibition (1946) and 'The Festival of Britain' (1951).
