Accessibility

Our commitment to making our website as accessible as possible

We want everyone who visits the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture website to feel welcome and find the experience rewarding, going above and beyond the The Public Sector Bodies Accessibility Regulations 2018.

What are we doing?

To help us make the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture website a positive place for everyone, we’ve been using the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1. These guidelines explain how to make web content more accessible for people with disabilities, and user friendly for everyone.

The guidelines have three levels of accessibility (A, AA and AAA). We’ve chosen Level AA as the target for the Museum of Domestic Design and Architecture website.

How are we doing?

We’re working hard to achieve our goal of Level AA accessibility, but we realise there are some areas that still need improving. The following information explains what we’re doing to make that happen.

1.1.1: Non-text Content

– we aim to provide transcripts/subtitles for all video and audio content

– we aim to go through all images and add missing alt-text

– we will check that any text within images is correctly captioned

1.2.3: Audio Description or Media Alternative (Prerecorded)

– we aim to provide transcripts/subtitles for all video content

1.2.5: Audio Description (Prerecorded)

– we aim to provide transcripts/subtitles for all video content and we will consider audio description where appropriate

1.3.1: Info and Relationships

– We are working with our content management system providers to ensure our templates are built correctly. This includes use of proper headings and nesting, WAI-ARIA labelling, and working functionality. We are also working to remove all bold tags, and replacing them with strong tags.

1.3.5: Identity Input Purpose

– we intend to look into this

1.4.11: Non-text Contrast

– we will check this and address if necessary

1.4.12: Text Spacing

– we intend need to test this

1.4.13: Content on Hover or Focus

we intend to discuss this with our content management provider

1.4.3: Contrast (Minimum)

– we are aware of some issues in this area and we intend to address them

2.1.2: No Keyboard Trap

– we intend to double check this requirement

2.4.1: Bypass Blocks

Currently there is no way to skip past repeated content to a page’s main, unique content. We are working to provide a heading for each block of content that is repeated on multiple web pages, to ensure this can be navigated more freely.

2.4.4: Link Purpose (In Context)

– we intend to check this

2.4.7: Focus Visible

On some pages, the keyboard focus is not clearly visible on every element. We are working with our content management provide to address this.

3.3.1: Error Identification

– we intend to check this issue

3.3.2: Labels or Instructions

– we will discuss this with our content management provider

4.1.1: Parsing

– we intend to check this

4.1.2: Name, Role, Value

– we will find out more and address if necessary
